Ontario Secondary School Catholic Teacher: OCT Standards of Practice for the Teaching Profession
As Catholic school teachers, we have a “dual mandate” to teach our students with the standards and ethics of the Ontario College of Teachers (OCT) the Ontario Curriculum, as well as develop and grow our students through the Ontario Catholic School Graduate Expectations.
I noticed a high degree of compatibility between being professionally accountable and facilitating the achievement of the OCGSEs. As a member of the teaching profession, we are committed to doing what is right and honourable under the Standards of Ethics. We set high standards for ourselves and we aspire to meet the standard in all aspect of our lives - at work, at home, and in service to our profession, which is further reinforced by Standards for Practice and the OCGSEs. The Standards of Ethics, Standards of Practice and OCGSEs describe the expectations that we have of ourselves, our colleagues, our students, our community, and our Faith. They articulate the ideals to which we should aspire as well as the behaviours that are mandatory in our fulfilling of our “dual mandate” to the ministry of education and to the Catholic Church. Please see file below for correlaitons between OCT and OCGSEs.

We inhabit a secular society in which our awareness of religion is secondary to more valued activities such as work, school, co-curricular teams/clubs, consumerism, and entertainment. Catholic student exposure to the teaching of the Catholic Church is limited to their involvement and engagement in their respective school community. This places increased responsibility to the role Catholic schools need to fulfill in fostering continuity, growth, and development of future generations of Catholics. Please view the file below to witness how our school works in collaboration with our students to be more church like.
